After watching Ken Robinson's TED talk about education, express your thoughts on how his views do/do not relate to the concept of Genius Hour? What about Ken Robinson's views do you agree/disagree with ?
Ken Robinson's views completely relate to the concept of Genius Hour. He believes, and I do too, that the method of "learning" in America is not the right way. He thinks education should be personalized to fit the very diverse population of those who are being educated. Standardized tests are not the way to do all of education. This relates to Genius Hour because the concept of Genius Hour is that time is given for kids to explore and learn something of their own interests. The kids will not be cramming information for a test, memorizing the answers in two minutes to regurgitate them onto a scantron card and never think about the information again. Genius Hour promotes education of a different kind- real learning.
I agree with everything Mr. Robinson had to say. I have researched education in Finland before because I was fascinated when I saw high school statistics for overall grades, testing, dropout rates, and more. The main reason why I looked into the Finnish way of education was because I am not happy with America's school system as a whole. The system is not meant to promote learning, its meant to keep us silent and in line. My personal experience with the faulty school system started when I was in elementary school. I was very good at spelling and reading, and I barely had to look at the words to get them all right on the test. My parents asked my teacher if I could have more spelling words, just to keep me challenged and engaged. My teacher said no. I wasn't supposed to be advanced, I was just supposed to be able to do the words given. Anything extra was unnecessary. It didn't matter that I was doing no learning at all.
