Hobbit Costume
I have been working on a couple of small projects. For the KHS Night Show, I made my hobbit costume. I bought all of my materials from Goodwill. Sometimes it takes a lot of digging, but thrift shops can be gold mines. For the hobbit costume, my goal was to have brown pants, an off white shirt, a green vest, and a red jacket for the completed costume. Here's what I found: semi-dress pants that were the perfect colour, a brown vest, a white button up shirt, and a women's light jacket that was red. Because the vest was not the right colour, I also found a men's green button up shirt.
First I tackled the pants. The waistband was really stiff, which I couldn't have because I needed to bring the waist in at some point so the pants would fit me. I ripped out the layers of interfacing with a seam ripper and ironed a strip of fabric liner to be the new waistband. Between the lining and the actual pants there was space where I could plausibly thread some elastic to make the pants fit. I ended up not using elastic because I did not like the bunching. I threaded a skinny belt through and used that to keep the pants up. To complete the pants, I simply hemmed them at mid-calf level.
I left the white shirt and the red jacket as they were, leaving the jacket to conceal the over sized white shirt.
I then worked on the vest. My plan was to use the brown vest as a template for the green shirt to be made into a vest. I took apart the green shirt at the sides and shoulders and removed the arms. I only kept three of the buttons on the front because I wanted my vest to be short and fitted. Then I just mirrored the brown vest and changed things to what I wanted. I hemmed it in and sewed the front and back together and I was done.
